mission Sideboard
A Challenging case piece for even the seasoned woodworker.  Our mission sideboard, is based on a design created by Gustav Stickley over 100 years ago.  During this course, students will select and mill their own lumber, paying particular attention to where and how different figures are employed for continuity in design, and stunning results.  They will also execute several types of mortise and tennon joinery to complete the numerous joints that make up this piece.

Other skills that will be explored are resawing and book matching panels for the doors and side assemblies;  Milling lumber true, flat, and square; Haunched tennon frame and panel door construction; Ship lapping panels, to make up the enclosed framework of the back assembly; Practical methods for cutting through and half blind dovetails which make up the three drawers in the mid section of the sideboard; Creating complex framework of dust panels and drawer supports which make up the internal structure; and creating legs which feature quarter sawn figure on all four sides, using the same method preferred by Gustav Stickley.

Upon completion of the course, students will have created a sideboard that is dry fit, together, and ready for sanding, glue up, and finishing work back at their own home shops.  Or students can have us complete their sideboard to our museum quality standards by choosing our completion service.
