Mortise and Tennon Joinery On September 11th, Gregory will give a presentation on Mortise and tennon joinery for the Western North Carolina Woodworkers Association, in Fletcher, NC. Gregory will focus on the fundamentals of making this classic woodworking joint, and how to achieve a good fit as well as a tight appearance. We'll also look at some variations of the Mortise and Tennon, and a couple different ways of making the two components. Plus, we'll get a look at a shop made tool that will help you make mortise and tennon joints easier, quicker, and more consistent. Everyone who employs this type of joinery in their work won't want to miss this event! |

Finishing & Q&A Gregory Paolini will be presenting an interactive finishing seminar for the Greenville Woodworking Guild. Gregory will share his formula for simulating classic fumed antique mission furniture, and one of his favorite top coats, which gives wood a silky smooth feel. During the event, Gregory will also dispel some wide spread finishing myths, ensuring you get museum quality results with your finishing. Volunteers from the audience will be requested to undertake the procedures Gregory will be describing and outlining. Using Hand Planes Nothing says old world craftsmanship like the whoosh of a well tuned hand plane, in the hands of a skilled craftsman, taking a gossamer shaving off a board. In this full day class, students will learn about various planes as well as how and when to use them. We will thoroughly cover plane nomenclature on various styles of western bench and bevel up planes. Students will tune and set up a western style bench plane, review sharpening, and learn proper technique for edge and face jointing with a hand plane. During the day we will perform various real world planing exercises, including planing down to a reference surface (flush planing), and flattening a glued up panel. Troubleshooting and Q&A will be addressed throughout the day.
